Devon Horse Show

I've been going to the Devon Horse Show since... oh I dunno, forever. Probably somewhere around ten years, when I started riding horses. It's pretty fabulous.

We do the same thing every year:

- Get mint and lemon iced tea

- Eat tea sandwiches (my mom is so cute)

- Play the carnival games

- Walk around the shops/gape at how expensive the flowers are at Terrain

- Eat ice cream

- Get the famous lemon sticks

- And of course, watch the horsies!

- Oh, and this time, I found this octopus candle holder--it's totally going in Sam and my apartment next semester. Oh yeah.

It's a super-fabulous good time. With ponies!

Goat Cheese... In a Pie?

Sometimes flavor combinations just seem wrong. Like there is no way that those two foods put together could possibly be appetizing.

But, there are also some combinations that seem odd, but like a car crash, you can't look away. It's so odd that you just have to try it. Whether it succeeds or fails, you need to know what that tastes like.

That's how I felt when I came across this recipe. It actually comes from one of the restaurants that Guy Fieri visited on Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives (I think I vaguely remember the episode).

Anyway, I just had to make this Blueberry, Goat Cheese, and Basil Pie.

Tell me you don't want to know what that tastes like.

Well, to tell you the truth, it doesn't really taste like goat cheese. We served the pie at our Memorial Day party. Various people in attendance hate goat cheese--but they loved the pie! It really was delicious. The cheese and heavy cream creates a super creamy center with just a slight tang. The basil flavor isn't strong at all but it does compliment the other ingredients. And the almond topping adds a great crunch and contrast to the smooth filling and buttery crust.

I also recommend making the dough in the food processor. The recipe says to make it with your hands, but if you're in a rush like I was, the food processor whips it up in no time.

The moral of the story is: embrace weird things. They're good (and sometimes yummy!)

A Real Occupation

I think I have a job. Like, a real job. One with real hours and a real payday. A job.

(Keep in mind, I'm knocking on wood like crazy over here in the hopes that I don't lose this oppotunity suddenly.)

Thanks to my fabulous brother and the pure happenstance that he lives with a chef, I may have just gotten a job in a kitchen at a restaurant in Philly. Woah.

I'll be baking, decorating (oh my), and prepping foods for the chefs. I just finished my training week and it's been great so far! The hours are long and hard but definitely fun and exciting. The thing I was most excited to learn was how to sharpen a knife on a wet stone. That may sound creepy. Oh well. It's the truth. I feel like I'm in a really ominous scene from a scary movie every time I swipe the blade across the stone. Yeah, it's pretty cool.

Anyways, I'm praying that I can hang on to the job and not mess up too badly.

On my first day walking back to my car, I came across a Swedish Fish truck. I didn't even know they existed!

I'll take it as a good omen.

We Did It!!!

It's official.

Sam and I became the laziest people on earth in our last week of this Spring semester.

According to the last count, we were 12 for 12. We accomplished our goal and watched

Brother Bear
Groundhog Day
Chimpanzee (we accidentally put the first Lord of the Rings here in the other post)
Lord of the Rings: Two Towers
Spinal Tap
The Blind Side
Big Fish
Say Anything
Shakespeare in Love
Inglorious Bastards
The Fall
He's Just Not That Into You

And actually, the day we watched Inglorious Bastards, ABC Family was doing a fabulous job adding to our inactivity by airing Clueless, The Lion King, and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Yup. We watched four movies that day.

I had never seen Say Anything before and it is officially my new favorite movie. I'm forever grateful to Sam for having me watch it. Now every time I here the song "In Your Eyes" I start giggling like a maniac. That movie is going on my birthday wish list.

Anyways, Sam and I are both at home now and miss each other dearly. We will both be updating the blog though--I know you were worried.

And this is what I'll be staring at for the next three months.

Life is good.

This Is What We Do With Our Lives

In an effort to avoid studying for finals, Meredith and I have a new goal for ourselves: watch a movie every night until we leave. Currently, we are 6 for 6, and we’ll be 7 for 7 in a few hours. So far, we’ve watched the following:

Brother Bear
Groundhog Day
Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
Spinal Tap
The Blind Side

I’d never seen Brother Bear or either of the Lord of the Rings movies, and Meredith hadn’t seen Groundhog Day or Spinal Tap (I took personal offense to the fact that she hadn’t seen Spinal Tap, as that is one of my favorite movies of all time—I think she liked it).

Brother Bear was incredibly cute, and I’ve officially decided that if I were given the choice between being a human and being a bear, I would choose being a bear, but only if being a bear is the way it was depicted in the movie. I’ve also decided that if I were given the choice between being a human and being a hobbit, I would choose being a hobbit, but only if it were guaranteed that I wouldn’t get all angst-y like Frodo does by the second movie. So to recap, over the past few days, I’ve learned that it goes hobbit, bear, human for me.

Tonight, we’re watching Big Fish, which Sam has never seen (Meri speaking now), and I'm hoping she'll love it as much as I think she will. Stayed tuned to see if we reach our ultimate goal!

I Almost Forgot!

It's May 1st!!! That means that Sam and I got to turn the page on our calendars! We were very excited. And rightfully so!
This month, Sam had another two adorable kittens doing yoga poses (much more successfully than I do, I must say).
And I got the love of my life, Phil from Modern Family (Ty Burrell). He is seriously one of my favorite people.
And his quote is "You're such a MILF: Meredith I'd Like to Friend." What a cutey.
Oh my goodness. It's May. Time flies when you're constantly looking forward to the picture on the next month of your calendar. -Meri
